A review of Praia da Luz – August 2024

A brief recap: Since arriving at Ocean Villas Luz in August 2020, writer David Lugg has been experiencing all aspects of Luz Life. This is his review of August 2024:

On paper, some things sound absolutely terrible, but then the reality is completely different. Let me ask you a question. According to a 2023 study, what costs around 1000€ per month, gives you hundreds of sleepless nights and completely ruins your social life? Yes, that’s right – it’s having a child. Sounds awful when it’s written down but the reality is that it is the greatest feeling of all.

There are plenty of other examples I can give you. How about the movie Jaws? Basically, it’s a few chaps running around tracking down a shark. However, the film is widely regarded as a Steven Spielberg classic. Everybody knows the ominous music, whilst one or two of the lines have gone down in history as being some of the most quotable of all time. The ‘Terminator’ was much the same. The film only had about three words but it’s one of the most popular movies of all time.

I’ll give you one final example. Who in their right mind would get up exceptionally early in the morning, feel panic that you might be late, sit in a building with thousands of other people, get inside a large aluminium tube for a few hours, before arriving in someone else’s house where, over a period of around seven days, you proceed to give away lots of your hard-earned cash? Yes, you’ve guessed it. It’s called having a holiday. On paper, it’s dreadful. In reality, it’s a necessity.

Yes, ‘necessity’ is the right word for it. Even during tough economic times, a holiday is something we all need. A chance to step away from our day to day routine, let our hair down and do all the things that our busy lives don’t always allow us to do.

A case in point: it’s a Monday morning as I write this blog and a middle-aged couple have just walked past my office eating ice creams. Only a select few would even consider an ice cream on a Monday morning at home. But on holiday, it’s a wonderful idea. How about two glasses of wine with lunch, followed by a snooze by the pool? At home, I don’t think the boss would be too keen on that idea, nor would the owner of the local swimming baths if you popped in for a siesta. But on holiday? Delightful.

And this is my point! When you’re on holiday, you can do away with what it sounds like on paper and there are few consequences. A popular choice is to turn off your phone. Not a great move if you work in an office, but on holiday, it’s a pleasure. The same goes for having a lie-in on a Monday morning. As a rule, the boss won’t be too keen, but on holiday? Who cares!

That’s the thing about having a holiday in Luz. Don’t worry with how it sounds on paper. It doesn’t matter. Become paper-free and live for the moment. There are scores of benefits as our happy guests will attest to. What’s more, it’s addictive. I have lost count how many times our guests have told me that they don’t usually return to the same place for their holiday, but they will definitely return to Luz. There is something special about this town.

To mis-quote Arnie from The Terminator…You’ll Be Back. And we’ll be here to greet you.

More news next month.
